Africa and the Islands International Film Festival of Le Port / Reunion Island

Le Port /Reunion Island/France

FROM THE LOCAL TO THE GLOBAL
The Fifai organized  each year by the city of Le Port, has for main theme the African cinematography,  and the moving pictures from  or about the Indian Ocean Islands and others areas treated by the various African diasporas. A unique Festival in Reunion Island linked to training structures of the industry and to a Higher Education School (Reunion Island school of Fine Arts), it is indeed a Festival for the Indian Ocean.

The festival is an exceptional gathering of programs with competitions and workshops. Competitions to promote premieres to defend some directors choices, to “repair” damaged or forgotten copies through workshops, to develop thematic researches.

It is the only  non mainstream Festival of the Island rooted in our cultural movements that deals with the questions raise by the Regional Cooperation meaning exchanges with the population of the region.
A festival dealing with the diasporas of the Islands , Africa, and of the whole globe, and through the strength of the creative freedom of authors  and directors, it is a Festival that goes from the local to the global.

A rare and unique moment in the island cultural agenda for the public, the Festival is also linked to cultural habits and to long term partners like Village Titan.

Focus has been given from the days of the Journées du Film d’ Afriques et des Iles a decade ago  on authors and directors, the Festival is an occasion for the professionals to confront aesthetics, to relate compared ideals and to propose debates
It is a networking place allowing for both professionals and the public privileged moments. The implementation of  a long term relationship between Reunion School of  Fine Arts the  Institute of the Image of the Indian Ocean (  ILOI) and the  Festival  has been of the key condition of its existence.

MY ISLAND WAS THE WORLD
As  usual  the Festival is host for the professionals of our South-Western region of the Indian Ocean and of Africa and elsewhere.
From a  new born  status  twenty years ago the island's regional film industry has arrived  to a point where projects and productions are flourishing.
The island connection with austral Africa  as been quite late to establish  But for more than ten years our numerous actions and events  in the town of Le  Port  and with the University have paved the way in order to discover Austral Africa, which is the new  emerging pole, and above all communicate with it.
The justification of these visions, along with the desire of  a new generation  to create new images  explain the programs

Long gone the era  when the neo-colonial insular consciousness was oppressed, created  produced or controlled by the “other”.
We are in La Reunion, and along with other close islands, on a constant quest with our partners for a moving picture produced by ourselves the local term would be “par nou mim”, a fraternal image from the West indies, from our Islands and from the Comoros Archipelagos.
We must open doors for the up and coming directors of our region, it is by  nature  one of the main aim of a festival.
What a pleasure  to witness   the birth of real contact with that referential South-African Festival in Durban,   an harbour city which has a special relation ,with our city of Le Port.
